About

SHIR AD, SONG FOREVER

The Association For Hebrew Song Legacy

 Background

Shir-Ad Association is a voluntary non-profit organization. Its artistic manager is composer-conductor-lecturer Dr. Ori Leshman. The association follows the footsteps of The Association for Hebrew Song Legacy, founded by composer and Israel Prize winner Nahum Hayman.

Prime Goal

Preserving and promoting social-cultural and educational Zionist values from the founding generation to the 1980s and instilling these values to younger generations, before they disappear from Israeli culture and become a thing of the past. All this, in order to strengthen young Israelis' bond with their country and raise their awareness to the importance of the role they should play in .designing the future of Israel and Israeli society.

Current State of Affairs

Hebrew songs are one of the history sources and spiritual treasures of our people. The songs – inalienable national assets – were written by the greatest composers and lyricists, who – with their spiritual richness – documented the soul, culture, language and values of our country and the changes it experienced through the years. Hebrew songs play a crucial role in defining our national, educational, cultural and linguistic identity, as well as our mutual bond and social togetherness. In recent years, Hebrew songs have been pushed aside: singing lessons are no longer a part of the programs of the Ministry of Education; Many songs just do not stand the test of time; New immigrants as well as Sabras do not have a clue about them; The English language is increasingly evident in many Israeli songs. Most disturbing is the fact that big fragments of linguistic richness and Zionist heritage reflected in the Hebrew songs are close to being lost.

Ways of Action

Education – Exposing Israeli pupils to Hebrew songs as part of the program of the Ministry of Education by implementing a program that will teach history, language and music through Hebrew songs; Holding concerts and lectures for youth in non formal education systems.

Renewing – Reviving forgotten treasures of Hebrew singing, by recording up-to-date versions; Recording works that have never been recorded to date.

Preservation – Converting decaying original recordings of material mostly written during the pre- state years into modern formats; Publishing CDs which will include history, background stories and photos of the artists and their work.

Simple Access – Running a YouTube channel and an Internet site2 for the benefit of the public which serve as a source of information and allow interaction with the surfers, to promote the Hebrew songs as well as their values, their legacy and the history reflected in them.
